This was my first “Churchill” sized cigar. Given most other Cuban and non-Cuban cigars of a similar vitola are at least 2x the price point, it was delightful how flavourful and fulfilling this cigar is! After the first 20, I bought over 200 of these. I wanted to age them, but within a year of buying, I have no more than 15 or 16 left today. That’s how lovely and almost irresistible these cigars are.
The Vega Toro Churchill is about a 45-60 minute smoke, but 25-30 if you are a quick smoker. It starts pretty smooth and mellow, with notes of wood, leather and hints of spice in the first one-third.
Progressing to the second, the wood and leather notes continue, and the spice notes get bolder. Towards the middle of the second one-third, there are hints of cream, and the spice notes get a little sweet with notes of cinnamon.
In the last one-third, the wood notes mellow down, while leather and spice notes are much bolder, enhanced and smoothened by the creamy notes.
The bottom line is that it is a lovely, everyday smoke that is quite affordable.
Note and Warning:
I have frequently rushed the smoke in the first one-third, and much to my despair, the spice notes dominate, and it becomes extremely harsh. Watch for the cigar warming up – if it does, it is a tell-tale sign of the harshness that will come through.
I do like spicy cigars, but the Vega Toro Churchill is not a “full-bodied” cigar. I would strongly recommend that you take your time in the first two-thirds.
